Senior Hurling County Final 2016 - First Game

Bray Emmets  v Carnew.

All roads to Aughrim at last, to face Carnew in this year’s county final and hopefully complete the three in-a-row, and write another page in the history book for the club. We started into the town end and aided by the breeze, we would need to build a good lead facing into the second half. It was Carnew’s Enda Donaghue that opened the scoring with a point from play, Mikey Lee responded for Bray firing over a point and few minutes later Cian O’Byrne was put in for a great goal chance but fired inches over the bar.

Paulie Cunningham from play and Diarmuid Masterson from a long range free added two more points and we lead 4 points to 1. Carnew came back with three points on the trot to level. Mark Lennon was then set up with a great move but he was blocked and Carnew cleared. Mikey put us back in front in the 23rd minute, Wayne Kinsella added a point for Carnew from play and in the 29th minute Christy popped over a free to leave us only one point up at the break 6 to 5. DarragH and John Henderson with Luke Maloney were holding their own in the halfback line but we were finding it hard at centre field, Paulie Cunningham was well on top at centre forward.

The second half saw Carnew score two points to put them ahead, Christy pointed with 13 minutes gone but Enda Donaghue who was going well on the frees pointed once more, Eoin McCormack replaced Cian O’Byrne and immediately began to make an impact, with 17 minutes gone he broke through, drew the back man and passed into Mikey who controlled it well and slotted past Andrew Fitzgerald in the Carnew goal, Mikey fired over a point two minutes later and we were back in control , with 21 minutes gone, Christy pointed a close free and we lead 1.9 to 9.

Timmy Collins collected a pass from Don Hyland to reduce the lead to two, in the mean time we had a point cancelled out for line ball that appeared to be very harsh, with the linesman putting up the flag after the point had been awarded on the scoreboard. Another attack by the Carnew men in the dying moments lead to the ball being thrown in yet again by referee and one of the Carnew men apparently was fouled, Donaghue again popped it over and with the two minutes of additional time well up Don Hyland scored a huge point to level and the final whistle went.
