Leinster club semi-final
Bray Emmets Vs Bennettsbridge
It was all roads to Arklow for the Leinster semi-final instead of Aughrim as a last minute change due to the weather had to be put in place. The referee inspected the pitch in shocking conditions at around 11 o clock before throw in at 12.30 and decided to go ahead with the game.
There was one change from the previous day out with Lorcan Pratt coming in for Mark Lennon. The Kilkenny side started well with two points before Christy Moorehouse pointed a free for Bray, the stand in Arklow was full with both sets of supporters and one could feel the atmosphere building right from the throw in.
The first half was very intense, with our back line coming under huge pressure, and Eoin Mason in the Bray goal having to clear his lines several times, Bennetts Bridge were 4 to 3 ahead with 15 minutes played and 6 to 3 after 20 minutes, our boys were well in the game and played with some great support play and team work, not a minute to get your breath, nearly every block and clash, even side line ball was greeted with a roar from the stand as the fight to survive and remain competitive in this match grew, another point for the Kilkenny champions and just before half time Christy pointed another free to it 7 points to 4 at the break, with the crowd certainly getting behind both teams as they left the field.
The second half started with Mikey moved to centre forward and Paulie to full , with the first attack, we were awarded a free and Christy pointed, the Bray boys smelled an upset, however the Bridge were in no mood to lie down and replied with three points on the spin, 10 to 5 and our lads badly in need of a score, we set up another attack and who is on the end of it only Christy our go to man for a score and he didn’t disappoint, blasting the ball past Enda Cleere in the Bridge goal, 1.5 to 10 and game again, it was at this point with 18 minutes gone in the second half that Aaron Murphy was penalised for over carrying, after ripping through the Kilkenny mid-field and about to pull the trigger, was bundled over, the crowd were not happy to say the least and the resulting free was pointed by Nickey Cleere the ace free taker for Bennettsbridge, instead of one point down it was three, a two point turn around.
Moments later a quick puck out caught us by surprise and another point was slotted over and with 28 minutes gone 16 to 1.6, these are the little things that can be difference between winning and loosen, the Kilkenny boys introduced Brian Lannon who taped over another two points and the journey ended for a very gallant Bray side, who certainly gave a good account of themselves on the day.
