County Hurlers and Footballers
Monday, March 25, 2013
Sunday, 24th March saw both county teams in action again although the double-header in Aughrim never materialised after the Hurlers moved their game to Arklow. There, the home side featuring our own John Henderson and Mikey Lee took on a Westmeath side that had promotion from Division 2A of the Allianz National Hurling League on their minds. Despite a first half where Wicklow acquitted themselves very well, the Midlanders came away with a comfortable win in the end on a final score of Wicklow 2-8 Westmeath 0-21.
Over in Aughrim, Luke Benson once again filled the full-back berth for the Footballers who were facing Cavan in a vital Allianz National Football League Division 3 match. After a good start, Wicklow eventually found themselves trailing by four points at the half-hour mark and in truth, were never able to reduce that lead as Cavan did just enough throughout the game to maintain that two/three point cushion. At the full time whistle, Cavan emerged victorious on the scoreline of Wicklow 0-11 Cavan 0-14. The result all but seals Harry Murphy’s side to relegation to Division 4.
