Bray Emmets 1-4 Donnaghmore-Ashbourne 2-5
The U16 footballers were unlucky to lose their first round Leinster League match in Old Conna. They dominated possession for large parts of the game but failed to convert that dominance into scores. Donaghmore Ashbourne started the stronger and scored a point in the first couple of minutes. Bray started to grow into the game but were unlucky when Donnaghmore-Ashbourne were awarded a very soft penalty which they scored. However that penalty sparked the Bray lads into life and they got the final 3 scores of the half and forced the Donnaghmore-Ashbourne goalkeeper into a couple of spectacular saves. They finished the half trailing by a point. The 2nd half was a similar story in terms of dominating possession. We picked up a couple of injuries in the final quarter and Donnaghmore-Ashbourne scored on the counter attack in the last few minutes when Bray were pressing hard for a winning goal.
The corner backs, Andrew O’Brien and Rory Whelan were efficient on everything they did and Donnchadh Griffin dominated the small square. The half back line of Joe Phelan, Ben Kearney and Darragh Rochford played superbly, outplaying their direct opponents and attacking whenever the opportunity arose. The new midfield partnership of Sid Hunt and Ronan McMahon continues to grow and they dominated that area for large parts of the game with some fine high fielding. Andy Conway, Cian Lohan and MacDara Ó Midheach were the pick of the forwards with Andy being a particular thorn in the opposition’s side. He was unlucky not to finish with more than the 1-2 he scored.
