U13 Hurling

27 March, 2015

Bray Emmets Under 13s had their third match in the Dublin Hurling League against Castleknock on Friday.  Played in perfect conditions Bray settled well with Sam and Philip getting on top early on at midfield ensuring quick accurate ball going into the forward line of Brian, Riain, Rory, Cathal, Daniel and Michael . However Castleknock came more into the game as the half wore on with the backline of Adam, Tadhg, Sebastain, Aaron, Andrew  and Zack defending stoutly, however all their efforts could not keep the Castleknock boys at bay as they swept into a well deserved lead.
So after 10 minutes Bray were down by 5 points and it looked like it was going to be a long night. What happened from that point until the end was some of the most entertaining and skilful hurling performances by an underage Bray team ever seen by this writer and it was a privilege to be there.
Spurred on by the calming influence in goal by Ben, the Bray backline now hunting in packs , blocking and hooking and tackling to ensure the tide turned in Bray’s favour, the introduction of Jamie, Jack, Gavin, the ever excellent Eoin and Luan who despite being unwell ensured Bray were on top at half time.
As a light rain fell in the second half Bray started the second half as they ended the first with the backline of Adam, Jamie, Aaron, Tadhg, Zack, Eoin and Sebastain keeping their direct opponents at bay. Ben made two excellent saves and his accurate puck outs were the launching pads for many an enterprising attack by Jack and Philip in midfield. The young but brilliant wing forwards in Michael and Gavin ensured that hat-trick hero Riain, Andrew, Brian, Rory Daniel and Cathal were given plenty of scoring opportunities, the re-introduction of Sam halfway through the second half saw Castleknock heads go down and Bray ran out deserved winners
This was the best performance so far by this group of players. They have been training hard and the dynamic drills and warm ups prepared and devised by Terry are ensuring that the players are trying things in games.
The passing, while not always perfect, is being done at pace and there is a greater appreciation of space within the group. The under 13s are well conditioned and prepared by Terry and as the saying goes Níl gá a eagla na gaoithe tinn nuair a bhfuil do stoic féar a ceangailte síos.
Special mention must go to Riain who scored a hat-trick on the night, Riain may not be the biggest player on the team but he has the heart of a lion and when he wasn’t scoring goals he was blocking and hooking ensuring his marker did not have a minutes peace. Another player that deserves huge credit on the night is Ben our goal-keeper. It would have been easy for Ben’s head to drop after Castleknock scoring two quick goals but Ben made a number of critical saves in both halves and was calmness personified.
A special thank you to Castleknock for rescheduling the game and coming out on a Friday night and a special thanks to the referee who had to come by Bus from Lucan leaving his house at five to be out in Bray on time, now that’s commitment!
Team: Ben, Jamie, Aaron, Adam, Tadhg, Eoin, Zack, Andrew, Sam, Philip, Jack, Daniel, Brian, Luan, Michael, Riain, Gavin, Rory and Cathal
