U12 Football

12 May, 2014

The U-12's footballers travelled with two teams on Monday 12/05/2014 to play a Blessington squad weakened by a number of late withdrawals, and performed very well on a wet pitch in very heavy showers.
The team lined out as 11 players and settled quickly. Midfielders Cathal Eddy and Charlie Dunne won a lot of difficult ball and with strong support from Jack Treacy at centre back put tremendous pressure on the Blessington defence. Gavin Rochford at half forward got a number of excellent scores including 2 goals that dropped in over the goalkeepers head. The other forwards Daniel Flavin and Michael Healy did great work acting as suppliers of quality ball to the incoming attackers, and Rory Mulcahy at full forward chased everything that came his way. The backs showed tremendous skill against some excellent Blessington forwards. Finn Treacy was immense, fielding, blocking and clearing every ball. Eoin Holmes worked tirelessly chasing down attackers and Luan Roddy made excellent blocks and clearance. The 4 backs with Owen Kelly in goal were so solid that they never looked like scoring a goal, the majority of Blessington's scores came from frees struck from distance by their excellent midfielder. Gordon Dowling came on and did good work in defence and continued after half time as a forward. Bray Emmets held a six point lead at half time, and built their dominance after the break. Michael Healy switched to the goalkeeping position where he stopped many an attack and Owen Kelly moved to a forward position. Despite a very heavy downpour, Bray Emmets continue to play excellent football , with great link play and they grew the score with further goals from Gavin, Charlie, Jack and Cathal, and a number of well taken points. Blessington fought to the end and despite the scoreline are a fine side, with great skills. The match finished after a committed and skilful display on the scoreline Bray Emmets 7-6 Blessington 0-12
In the second game, Bray started with 10 players, as one of the parents got lost in Roundwood (you know who you are!!!) Despite starting well and getting good possession Bray missed a number of opportunities and paid the price with Blessington scoring a goal. This seemed to settle Bray who then went on to take a number of well worked scores from Brian, Aidan, Daniel and Sam. Excellent midfield play from Art and Matthew who had an great match, ensured the forwards got good ball. The back line of Evan, Peter, Philip and Donal were very tight with Conor playing well in goal with Bray ahead at half time. A few changes of personel and positions resulted in a slow start to the second half from Bray with Blessington quick off the blocks to score two goals. Again Bray settled with Peter now playing up front scoring a number of well worked points, soon Brian, Daniel, Art, Aidan and Sam got in on the scoring act with Evan bombing forward laying off great ball to the forward line. Matthew continued on from his first half performance providing excellent first time ball which led to a number of scores. What was pleasing about the team performance was the group's appetite for work and many a Blessington attack was snuffed out by good tackling by the back line of Donal, Aaron and Conor. Blessington continued to press forward and Philip was called upon to make a number of saves. Overall this was a good performance especially on a night when conditions were slippy and there was a downpour during the second half. It must be noted however that Blessington were missing a number of key players (eight to ten players) which would cripple any team, and the scoreline was not reflective of the pressure Bray were under particularly in the second half.
