Bray V Baltinglass U-12 Modified Championship

7 November, 2010

Sunday, 7th November 2010, Arklow.

Bray U-12's headed down to Arklow for the second time in three weeks last Sunday for the Wicklow U-12 Modified Championship Final. It was also their third final or league play-off in three weeks. This in itself was a huge achievement for all of the lads involved considering the disappointing season we had last year. Unfortunately in the previous two weeks we were beaten by Carnew in the Wicklow Hurling Championship, and narrowly lost the Dublin Football league play-offs against St Kevin's / Killian's by only two points.

Sunday's final was against Baltinglass who we played earlier in the year and lost to them in their back yard. But this time Bray were really up for it, and determined to over turn the last result in this, the more important of the two matches.

The weather conditions were perfect despite the storms that had been forecasted, and the match started out at a blistering speed. For the first ten minutes Baltinglass were camped in the Bray half with the backs coming under huge pressure. There was some hard crunching tackles being put in by Evan, Conan and Ben, and some very tight marking by Kevin and Conn which put off their men just enough to force them to kick wide. Despite all of this and some great goal-keeping by Cian, Baltinglass managed to sneak a few scores but their frustration with all this defending resulted in Mark getting a bang on the head which resulted in a temporary substitution with Noah. Our mid-field of Phillip and Owen were covering a huge amount of ground breaking forward when ever we got the chance and tracking back when we lost possession. But despite all Baltinglass's possession our half forwards of David, Andy and Ryan grabbed every breaking ball in the middle of the park and moved it up to the full forward line of Adam, Saoirse and Simon. With a few minutes to go in the first half a few substitutions were made with Ben, Cormac and John coming on and all made a big contribution. It was through a number of quick breaks with midfield and forwards that we kept up with Baltinglass and by half time the scoreboard show the match was all even at 2-02 each.

The second half saw an increase in the speed of the game and Bray backs and midfield was doing its best to keep up with a very fast Baltinglass who were starting to increase their lead with point after point. Ben and Mark were continuing to defend the centre, and Cian was keeping a clean sheet. Further attacks by Baltinglass saw Kevin and Noah in the back line putting in hard tackles as was Evan and Conan, who were also trying to break forward when Bray had the ball. With 12 minutes left, Baltinglass were ahead by 6 points, but Bray never stopped fighting back. Owen, who ran the legs off himself dropped back to half back and Evan, moved up to midfield with Phillip. This duo in midfield started winning all the breaking ball in midfield and were feeding it up to David, Andy and Ryan in the half forward line and Adam, Cormac and John in the full forward line. With less than ten minutes left Bray scored a goal cutting the lead to three points. Then a free kick was awarded to Bray with 4 minutes left it somehow ended up in the net made the game all square. Now it was Bray with all the momentum and had several chances to take the lead but they waited until the last minute where a shot on goal bounced of two people and again ended in the net.

There is no better a bunch of lads who deserved to win a final than this bunch of lads. Every one of them stuck with it and put in a huge effort this year and fully deserves this win. WELL DONE!
