Match Report: U-11 Hurling

2 November, 2013

The Bray Emmets Under-11 Hurlers completed their campaign with a hard earned win against Stars of Erin. Missing the hugely influential Philip Jakob through a thumb injury (get well soon Philip) Bray travelled to probably to the most scenic pitch in their league campaign in Glencullen. To say weather conditions were not conducive to free flowing hurling was an understatement as gale force winds and biting rain fell throughout the game. Undaunted, Bray played into the wind in the first half and settled quickly with dominant displays in midfield from Cathal, Jack and Zack ensured ball went into the industrious forward line of Brian, Daniel, Ben and Riain and great scores from Cathal and Brian ensured that Bray were ahead at half-time. It was not all one way traffic though with the back line of Aaron, Aodain, Rory and Tadhg under pressure at times but repelled the Stars of Erin's forward line. Sam in goal had a quiet but very chilly half such was the dominance of the Bray backline.
Half-time came and some positional changes were made but the expected Bray onslaught did not materialise due to a strong rear guard action by a gallant Stars of Erin side. Continued good play from Jack, Zack and Sam in midfield continued to provide good ball into the forward line and Brian and Daniel very unlucky not to score. In a counter attack Stars of Erin managed to score a goal to go ahead and it looked like Bray might lose. However hard work from Aaron, Tadhg, Rory and Aodain stemmed the tide and an excellent goal from Daniel after hard work by Riain and Cathal put Bray in the lead again. Bray still could not push on and only for an excellent interception from Ben in the closing minutes, the result could have different.
This was a hard fought contest in very difficult conditions (the sound of wind turbine next to pitch was frightening and at one stage the goal posts were blown away!) but this team never gives up and always gives its best. This has been a successful season for this group in terms of results but more importantly the team has learned a lot from playing with each other on a consistent basis and there has been huge improvement. They are a credit to their peers, parents and the Club and hopefully they will continue to improve over the next twelve months as much as they did this year.
